SquareMeal Review of The Potager Restaurant at Barnsley House

Barnsley House and its lovely arts and crafts-style gardens, designed by horticultural doyenne Rosemary Verey, attract green-fingered aficionados from all over the world, but this delightful 17th-century building also serves as a destination boutique hotel, spa and restaurant. The Potager (named after Verey’s celebrated kitchen garden) offers a daily Anglo-Med menu based on seasonal pickings – plus supplies of local meat and fish. A typical meal might kick off with fennel-cured salmon and cucumber jelly ahead of Cotswold lamb with cassoulet, tomato and sweetbreads or roast partridge with baked Russet apple, truffle potato and bacon, plus pumpkin crème brûlée for afters. To finish there's Venetian rice pudding with roasted figs. Alternatively, self-styled ‘Barnsley market garden’ lunches are spot-on for freshness and value. The hotel also owns the adjacent Village Pub, which offers gastropub-style food and simple accommodation.

A real show off place that overlooks the Seafront in Brighton and does really excellent food. Most of the time the atmosphere is really buzzy and exciting.
