Set in the heart of Angel, just minutes from the station, The Peacock is a lively and modern neighbourhood pub with a menu of British food and great drinks. The name references the pub’s history, the former Peacock Inn, which stood on the same site from 1564 until 1962 and was referenced by Charles Dickens in his famous novel, Nicholas Nickleby. It’s not like the watering holes of old, The Peacock is a contemporary space, a social hub suited to both casual meet-ups and lively evenings.
The atmosphere is warm and inviting. Think west-end style overhead bulb lighting, semi-circular banquette booths, long oak tables and green walls packed with interesting prints and drawings. Relaxed and sophisticated, it stands as a social destination primed for post-work drinks and Saturday brunches.
But it’s the Sunday menu at The Peacock that amassed a loyal following. In collaboration with renowned butchers HG Walters, Sundays offer Duroc free range pork belly and 28-day aged Hereford sirloin with all the trimmings. But if you’re looking for a feast, guests can pre-order a slow-cooked bone-in shin of beef to serve groups of three to four.
The Peacock menus fuse classic pub fare and modern culinary invention. So you can expect more traditional fish and chips and hearty burgers to appear alongside seasonal specials. The a la carte menu is divided into snacks for the table, small plates, specials and mains. If you’re gathering with friends, start with grilled flatbread and nduja oil, a plate of seared king scallops, and salt and pepper squid to share.
Elsewhere you’ll find pan-roasted salmon with crushed new potatoes and samphire, along with butternut squash and spinach tagliatelle. To finish, choose between a classic berry and apple crumble, sticky toffee pudding, and vanilla panna cotta with macerated English strawberries.
