The Owl at Lichfield is a pub and restaurant in its eponymous Staffordshire city. Vibrant and historic, the city is notable for its three-spired medieval cathedral and for being the birthplace of Dr. Samuel Johnson, the first person to write a comprehensive dictionary of the English language. Its city centre has over 230 listed buildings, including many fine examples of Georgian architecture, helping to retain a characterful and historic appearance. The Owl falls in line with this history while also providing a modern twist. The former pub has been updated, resulted in an eclectic blend of furniture and design styles.
This is the perfect place to enjoy a food menu that is as much about perfecting the classics as it is looking to the future of pub dining. The nibbles section is perfect for enjoying with a few drinks in the vast beer garden, and features the likes of olives, cheese and bacon loaded fries, mini halloumi bites, and garlic flatbread with cheese. For starters, there’s soup of the day, vegetable spring rolls, tempura prawns, and sharing nachos, to name but a few.
The selection of mains contains the most obvious nods to The Owl’s pub roots. Fish and chips, a rotating curry of the day, steak and ale pie, and a range of steaks with chips are all on offer. So too is lamb tagine, sea bass with crushed new potatoes, and teriyaki chicken. Vegetarian dishes are refreshingly plentiful, including a three bean vegetable chilli, vegetable lasagne, vegetable burger, and spiced vegan pie. There’s also a dedicated pizza menu, which features the classics like margherita and pepperoni but also Texas BBQ and meat feast.
On Sundays, a roast is served. Beef, lamb, pork, and chicken are all available. Any three meats can be combined to create a Sunday platter. All roasts come with roast potatoes, a Yorkshire pudding, gravy, pigs in blankets, vegetables and stuffing.
