SquareMeal Review of The Orange

Bronze Award

Attracting a younger crowd than its swanker sibling The Thomas Cubitt, this huge Belgravia gastropub earns its keep with plenty of buzz on the boozy ground floor and the wood-fired oven pumping out fresh, crisp pizzas, while the bartenders pull pints of Canopy beer and mix the odd cocktail. Upstairs, others make reservations for dinner and there’s proper table service in a serene space that resembles a country pub dining room. The kitchen does a good trade in pizzas up here too, but it also turns its hand to more cheffy dishes such as grilled sardines with coddled egg and sheep’s cheese, balsamic braised lamb pie with sour-cream mash, or gingerbread with port figs and brown bread parfait. Order ahead if you want your own joint to share for Sunday lunch. “Very moreish” says one fan, who is also quick to praise the “very accommodating, helpful and patient staff”.

The Orange is lovely inside and the pizza was tasty. It's a tad on the pricey end but worth going.

Business Dinner

We were all really impressed by how the whole event was run by two excellent waiters/barmen. The service was immpecable and we were made the feel really welcome. The food was delicious and everything was prepared to a high standard and served in plentiful amounts. Georgie the Events Manager was extrememly helpful and always there to answer questions. I was so impressed that I've booked another company evening here!!

Careful with your wine choice
Overall a good gastropub, but we were shocked when our bill came as the wine price was much higher than we expected. The prices on wine lists are usually glass price/bottle price, but not at the Orange. We didn't notice that the full bottle prices were on a separate page, and the second price, the one we expected to pay was price for a carafe of 500 ml. Waitress said she'd raised this with management after other customers had been similarly confused, but that they had done nothing about it. We paid and left the full 12.5% tip not wanting to penalise the waitress, after what had been good service, but it took the shine of an otherwise good lunch. We never would have ordered that wine if we'd know it would be £49.

Tasty Lunch
We visited the restaurant to celebrate a birthday at the end of June. Although we had a booking, there were plenty of tables to choose from. We were seated on the ground floor which has plenty of light with a view out onto the street. The lunch menu has a good range of choices. I went for the octopus with chorizo which was a good combination and very tasty. My friend had the burrata which was very moist and beautifully presented. For the main course I had the cod which although in appearance small in size, was perfectly filling -especially with the side order of polenta chips. These were surprisingly flavorsome and crispy. My friend ordered the lamb pie -and although surprised that is was more of a shepherds pie than a pastry, was nonetheless content with its size and flavour. All in all a good experience and a great place to be treated to lunch -as I was. Thanks John!

Very Moreish!
Had a very delightful time last Saturday night. We were late arrivals and not the easiest of guests but the waiters were very accommodating, helpful and patient with us. The atmosphere was very relaxed. The food and wine was of a very good standard. I would highly recommend and will return sometime for sure.

The Orange offers perfectly prepared british dishes in a casual and friendly atmosphere. It is the kind of restaurant where you can go for any occasion and you know that the staff will take care of you. One remark, the fish dishes are quite small compared with the generous portions of the meat options.
