Known affectionately as ‘Neppy’ by locals, The Old Neptune is one of only a few pubs found right on the beach in the UK. Sitting right amongst the pebbles of Whistable’s charming beach, and with the sea practically on its doorstep, The Old Neptune dates all the way back to the early 1800s, meaning that it’s steeped in history. These days it’s a favourite amongst locals and tourists alike, with its traditional pubby ambience and extensive range of local ales and freshly made food making it the perfect place to escape the cold outdoors.
The shabby, wooden exterior of The Old Neptune gives it a real sense of charm before you even head into the pub. A number of outdoor tables allow guests to eat and drink right down by the sea during the warmer months. Once you head inside, the décor is all very rustic with nautical themed paraphernalia a plenty and also a number of musical references dotted around the wall. The pub also sees a whole host of live performances on its regular band nights which tend to pack the place out.
When it comes to food, The Old Neptune is all about pub classics, with dishes such fish and chips, pie of the day and a burger featuring on the short but appealing menu. Specials might include dressed crab, a crayfish salad, or even a half lobster and chips, with all the seafood caught locally. During the summer the pub also has a beach barbecue on which they cook burgers and hot dogs to be enjoyed down by the sea.
The food offering is accompanied by a hefty selection of different beers with regularly changing guest ales. As well as this, there is also a decent variety of different wines on offer alongside the classic selection of spirits and soft drinks.
