Hidden upstairs at a landmark listed pub-turned-dining-room, The Old Fashioned Bar is a bolthole worth discovering. This cosy, comfy and informal spot resembles a drawing room in one of the pricey stucco terraces opposite. Its walls host photographer Lorenzo Agius’ portraits of screen stars, musos and personalities, many in unexpected poses. The bar, fashioned from recycled wooden crates, majors in premium whiskies and rums and barrel-aged cocktails, plus a range of confident, imaginatively dressed sips served at Sloane Square prices. We’re especially taken with an Old Fashioned where Ardbeg Uigeadail whisky is pepped up with homemade pimento and chilli sugar, and orange and cardamom bitters. Equally alluring is To Be Or Not To Be (mezcal, apple ‘elixir’ and lapsang souchong tea). Seafood and savoury bar snacks, DJs, mentored tasting sessions, film screenings and a bijou shisha terrace are further draws – as is the option to hire the venue for parties.
