The Nags Head is in Ainley Top, just outside Huddersfield. It is a quintessential country pub. The exterior is consumed by a crawling ivy, there’s stone floors throughout and wooden beams protrude from low ceilings. It is also part of Vintage Inns, a 186 strong network of pubs dotted throughout the UK.
The food menu centres on pub classics. Starters include deep fried Brie bites, king prawn cocktail and duck and orange parfait. The sharing starter is a whole baked Camembert. This is drizzled in honey and served with dipping bread.
Main options feature all the usual suspects. There’s fish and chips, sausage and mash, pie of the day and gammon steak and chips. You’ll also find dishes from further afield, such as the chicken and vegetable Penang curry and mac and cheese.
Those opting for steak have two choices: a 10oz rib-eye or 8oz sirloin. These are both served with fries, a portobello mushroom and your choice of sauce. The Nags Head also offers burgers, which can be either beef, chicken or butternut squash and chickpea. Mains are rounded out by a range of stone-baked pizzas, including a sticky duck and hoisin option.
On Sundays a roast is served. These are all served with roast potatoes and unlimited gravy. Meat eaters can choose from sirloin of beef, pork belly, turkey breast or lamb rump. For vegetarians, there’s a candied vegetable roast. All three meats apart from lamb can be combined to make a Sunday trio.
The Nags Head offers two set menus. There’s a fixed price lunch menu where two courses are £15.95 and three are £19.95. Those celebrating a special occasion can choose two courses for £21.95 or three from £26.95 from a set menu that features many highlights from the main menu.
