The Lion Inn, Trellech

SquareMeal Review of The Lion Inn, Trellech

A charmingly traditional inn in the ancient village of Trellech, The Lion was built in the 16th century as a coaching inn, brewhouse and pig farm. Traces of its original brewing cellar remain, as do some of the outhouses that served as sties. Inside are two rooms replete with exposed beams and open fires – one used as the bar, the other doing duty as a restaurant. An ardent supporter of microbreweries, the pub stocks a superb selection of Welsh ales, plus draught favourites such as Butcombe Bitter. Cider and perry are also strong suits – look for local favourites including Springfield and Raglan Tawny Owl. The Lion prides itself on its traditional interior, traditional welcome and traditional food, which might include homemade cottage pie or fresh home-cooked ham with egg and chips. Takeaway pizzas, too.
