Former clapped-out boozer The King Harold has been overhauled by its new owner and recast as the latest Star in a galaxy that, to date, includes The Stars of Bethnal Green, King’s Cross and Hackney Downs, as well as the Jackdaw and Star, Homerton. The mission statement of this family-friendly community hub is to deliver ‘cracking booze, great food and a huge dose of mischief’. Well, tick, tick and tick! Craft beers from Hackney’s Five Points and Leyton micro Signature Brew, two-for-a-tenner cocktails and Spritzes, and wine in the Star’s garden all slip down a treat. Food comes from East End pop-up burger barons We Serve Humans: the likes of brisket and short-rib patties; and crispy truffled mac'n'cheese in a bun with ‘frickles’ aïoli and beef-dripping chips. Entertainment includes weekly prize quizzes, a Lucky Voice karaoke room and DJs playing soul, funk and disco until 1am at weekends.
