What do they say; when in Whitehall? Well, that might not be the original saying but in this instance it absolutely applies as Raffles, the fabulously opulent hotel and restaurant complex at the Old War Office Building in Whitehall, has just opened a new bar that's just as fancy as you'd hoped.
Situated bang, smack opposite the Horse Guards, otherwise known as the official entrance to Buckingham Palace, it's no surprise that this new haunt is inspired by its iconic location, named The Guards Bar and Lounge.
Step inside and the interiors won't let you down: think an elaborate red-and-gold patterned rug covering the floor, large squishy armchairs in an array of rich hues and polished wooden panelling across the walls. United by a brass chandelier and large windows which offer an incredible view of Whitehall, it's the kind of place you can imagine Churchill might have visited.
The drinks menu is impressively lengthy and inspired by the famous Singapore Sling which was created at the Raffles Hotel in Singapore - a fun fact for those who didn't know! Cocktails in this drinks list have taken individual, deconstructed ingredients from the Sling, to be turned into something new. There's also a theme of local, seasonal British produce, with drinks using only the best ingredients which sit within these parameters.
As well as cocktails, the team have devised a fascinating-sounding liquid tasting menu which offers a breadth of eight mini drinks which together, offer a journey and exploration of the flavours of Raffles. And, as with any truly well-stocked bar, an impressive selection of old, rare and vintage drinks adorn the shelves behind the counter, and can be tried and discussed with your bartender. Plus, if in the mood for a nibble, bar snacks come in the form of beef sliders, Carlingford Oysters, and red endive with truffle, celeriac and chervil.
