The Greedy Cow is a laid-back, family-owned cafe in a quaint period building, nestled within Margate's Old Town. Since 2011 it has been run by Pete and Rachel, who value simple, well-cooked meals and a welcoming atmosphere, embracing regulars and out-of-towners alike.
Inside, The Greedy Cow has a clean, bright feel with splashes of colour. The walls are hued a rich green, which is a fun contrast from the sunshine-yellow exterior, and seating is kept rustic with wooden, communal-style benches. Around the space you'll find plants dotted casually about, with playful artworks lining the walls.
If you're in the mood for cake and a warm drink, expect all of the classics from a pot of tea to a cappuccino, but there are a few fancier options thrown in there as well. The Belgian hot chocolate sounds particularly delicious, as does the vanilla affogato. Cakes are homemade and from the looks of the cafe's Instagram, the team enjoy experimenting - the Battenburg-topped brownies look extremely eye-catching! Regulars include apple and date shortbread, citrus sponge and millionaire shortbread, all of which can be complemented with a scoop of ice cream.
The breakfast menu comes mostly in bun form with concoctions such as fried eggs, harissa, pineapple and coriander on a brioche bun, banana, peanut butter, pistachios and maple syrup on a sourdough bread, or halloumi, guacamole, cherry tomatoes and basil, again on a brioche bun.
Lunch comprises a mix of toasties, more buns, hot dogs and sides and is served from midday. Highlights here include the pulled pork bun with slow roasted shoulder of pork, toasted brioche bun, homemade bbq or apple sauce, pickled gherkins, red apple and celery slaw, as well as nachos topped with Greedy Cow's special cheese mix, homemade salsa, guacamole, sour cream and spring onions. There's also a whole sections of burgers to go at, with some interesting recipes like the stilton burger with stilton cheese, sliced beetroot, crushed salted tortilla chips, sweet red onions and lettuce.
If you have a sweet tooth, you should try the cafe's signature sundaes which are a glorious sugar overload, piling up hot fudge brownie with chocolate and caramel sauce, chopped hazelnuts, squirty cream and soft serve ice cream, alongside many other iterations.
