Finish a leisurely riverside stroll along Chiswick Mall with a pint at this historic 17th-century hostelry. The George & Devonshire’s cellar contains a door to a tunnel – once used by smugglers – that runs beneath St Nicholas’ Church. These days, the dog- and family-friendly pub is done out in distressed Georgian decor and features a comfy lounge, a dining room, a function room in its converted stables and a courtyard garden. The only dud note is the fact it overlooks Hogarth Roundabout on the A4. Nevertheless, that grim prospect doesn’t deter drinkers from populating its pavement tables on sunny Sundays, sharing Californian rosé from a list of two dozen wines, or enjoying pints of Spring Sprinter fresh from owners Fuller’s brewery adjacent. The kitchen’s repertoire runs from fish-finger sandwiches to chicken and chorizo stews, not forgetting the popular Sunday roasts and children’s meals. Open-mic evenings and poker nights are also held.
