Situated not far from the Chawton home of Jane Austen, The Fur & Feathers is as bucolic as the name suggests – an archetypal Victorian pub in the Hampshire countryside with a liking for local food and no-nonsense drinks. Herriad venison, pheasant and other game make their seasonal entrance, but the menu also offers plenty of inviting ideas all year round – from baked Tunworth cheese with fresh bread and apple for dunking to potted crab, veal and ham pie with proper shortcrust pastry, Hampshire steaks with all the trimmings or corn-fed chicken breast with watercress and bacon sauce. Sunday roasts are also popular with the locals, likewise the regularly changing roll call of draught beers and cider – perhaps Bowman’s Nutz, Two Cocks Discount, Welton’s Pridenjoy or Hog’s Back Hazy Hog. The pub also has a good stock of cigars from the humidor.
