About
Lavender reputedly helped to save the lives of the nefarious ‘four thieves’ during the medieval Plague – hence the name of this boozer off Lavender Hill. Once a music hall and home to the original Jongleurs comedy club, the premises are now in the hands of the Brighton-based Laines Pub Company who have turned it into a drinking den, eatery and leftfield entertainment venue complete with an on-site microbrewery and gin distillery. Inside it’s a zany mix of Victoriana, masonic symbolism and 60s kitsch, with nods to the Black Death, while an alfresco ‘gin yard’ is perfect for those balmy evenings. Food-wise, expect an eclectic menu spanning everything from burgers and beer-battered haddock to yellowtail ceviche, jerk chicken or pulled pork and kimchi baps. Gins, craft ales and freshly brewed Czech-style lager are the drinks of choice.
