Run in collaboration with über-cool drinks technician Ryan Chetiyawardana (White Lyan, Dandelyan), The Fount aims to revive flagging shoppers in Selfridges. The look – a modern take on a 1950s Italian soda fountain – is compromised somewhat by the bar’s brightly lit, department-store surroundings. Nevertheless, there are ideas aplenty on the drinks list, including Cream Gin Soda and Horchata (Bacardi Carta Blanca rum, vanilla, spices and oat water). A popular choice on our visit were sparklers such as British 45 (English fizz, celery and raspberry) and a miso sherry-enhanced Bloody Mary made with Lyan’s own-brand vodka. Crudités with bagna cauda and crème brûlée éclair are among a limited range of bar bites. The Fount’s back bar displays designer stemware for sale: the likes of Tom Dixon bowls, Simon Hasan decanters and Lee Broom’s ‘Half Cut’ Martini glasses (though at nearly £400 for six, you might need to be half-cut to buy them).
