Based right on Whitstable’s beautiful seafront, The Forge often has a large queue snaking around the corner due to its huge popularity amongst the locals. The Forge is by no means a run-of-the-mill sit down restaurant, but what it does have in bucket loads is charm. Sat on the sea wall, just a stone’s throw from the water, it also serves some of the freshest seafood in Whitstable with a particular focus on oysters which are displayed proudly at the front on a bed of ice. If you’re wanting a quick but high quality meal in Whitstable where you can sit and inhale the sea air, look no further than the Forge.
The Forge is, in effect, a painted wooden shed which you order from and then once your food is ready, you can either sit at the small number of chairs and tables outside, or plonk yourself right on the beach to enjoy your fresh seafood. The ever-changing menu is scribbled up on a blackboard, and there is also a board which explains everything about oysters and talks about the differences between the various types of offer.
When it comes to food, as well as the huge array of different oysters on offer at The Forge, there are plenty of other options to choose from. Its much-lauded fish and chips are very highly regarded amongst the locals and are of course very reasonably priced. Other options include burgers, scampi and chicken and chips, or if you’re wanting something a bit more special, you can also got for either a half or full lobster served with chips. In terms of sweet dishes, you can’t go wrong with The Forge’s doughnut soufflé which sees ice cream sandwiched between two doughnuts and a flake on top.
As well as serving hot drinks, The Forge is also licensed to serve alcohol with wine, cider and draught beer available.
