SquareMeal Review of The Fire Station Waterloo Road

Bronze Award

A summer 2015 overhaul seems to have upped the appeal of this popular fixture at Waterloo. Set in a sympathetically converted Edwardian fire station, the bar’s considerable floor space is mostly given over to drinking – though a rear section accommodates diners. Expect a long response time at peak periods, when office workers and commuters queue deep at a bar whose beer wall dispenses strong continental and London (including Sambrook’s) brews, plus Brakspear and Wychwood among the hand-pulls. Cocktails include Pineapple and Black Pepper Margarita; Clover Club; and a Vanilla and Fig Sour, with Maker’s Mark bourbon (£8.25). A dozen serviceable wines by the glass start at £3.20. Breakfast (from soft-boiled duck egg and sourdough soldiers to full English) is served from 7am until noon. Thereafter, you can lunch or dine casually on various pizzas and burgers (from £8), with sides of Parmesan fries, followed by brownies and tarts.
