SquareMeal Review of The Cut Bar

Bronze Award

This buzzing theatre bar and café attracts a lively bunch of Young Vic patrons and locals from breakfast through to last orders. Start the day with a muffin and a stiff espresso, and end it with a hot toddy or a mug of chocolate. In between, well-made cocktails combine fresh fruit with premium spirits (Waterloo sun is a mix of vanilla vodka, apple schnapps, apple juice and cinnamon), and the good-value wine list includes a drinker-friendly choice by the glass; there's also a small selection of fine vintages, all from boutique producers. Hungry drinkers can nibble on Szechuan chicken wraps or load up with juicy burgers in Sally Clarke’s brioche buns; otherwise, the menu runs from Waldorf salad to Finnan haddock fishcakes and spaghetti carbonara. Should the sun come out to play, book a table on the first-floor terrace.

Best steak ever, paired with sumptuous wines. What's not to like about this place from the delicious cheese bread that arrives on your table, to the wonderful service. Ahhh true heaven.

No drama for pre-theatre
A lively and buzzy cafe/bar with a short but varied menu; vegetarians are particularly well looked after here much to the delight of my veggie companion on this occasion. Her portabella mushroom burger was a sight to behold, served with a generous helping of fries. My crab linguine was tasty and packed a real chilli punch but could have done with an additional ladel-ful or two to make it a more substantial main course. Service was efficient, engaging and friendly and I would certainly stop by again for a pre-theatre meal. Not sure of using it for anything else to be honest, as the seats seemed to have come straight out of a school classroom, so we were quite glad to vacate and move to the slightly better comfort of the theatre.
