A much-loved independent cafe in the heart of Rye, The Fig is a cosy and vibrant space which serves an all-day menu that champions locality, as well as cocktails and locally roasted coffee.
The Fig is a chic and sophisticated space, but manages to retain a casual air. Floor-to-ceiling windows at the front of the store let in plenty of natural daylight, while slick black walls and hanging metallic pendant lighting give the space character. The menu at The Fig prides itself on relying on local businesses, sourcing produce from various trusted suppliers - bread comes from Judges Bakery in Hastings, fruit and veg is sourced from J&F Fruiterers in Rye Harbour and meat from The Ship in Winchelsea.
The Fig is best known for its brunch, which is served daily until midday. There are both sweet and savoury brunch dishes on the menu, with guests able to choose between the likes of eggs benedict on sourdough toast topped with smoked salmon and chive or a sweet waffle topped with banana, salted caramel, whipped creme fraiche and toasted pecans.
Later in the day, the lunch menu (served 12-4pm) expands to include the likes of pulled pork tacos with sour cream and mango salsa, and flatbread topped with cauliflower, sweet potato, tamarind dahl, yoghurt, pickled cucumber and almonds. The dinner menu meanwhile consists of an assortment of meat and fish dishes, plus vegetarian and vegan options. Start with the likes of Thai salad with toasted cashews and a chilli, lime and sesame dressing, before moving on to main courses such as Bombay fish cakes with coriander chutney or creamy mushroom and chicken gnocchi topped with Parmesan and truffle oil.
To round off your meal, tuck into sweet treats such as caramelised pineapple tart with coconut cream and passion fruit sorbet or dark chocolate cake with praline and whipped creme fraiche.
