Flanked by street lanterns, this charmingly bijou, bow-fronted boozer has managed to hold on to many of its original Victorian features – lately restored by The Enterprise’s enterprising owners. Handsome glazed tiles and a majestic neoclassical mahogany back bar set the scene for draught ales from Purity, Sharp’s and St Austell, plus over a dozen wines by the glass from £4, basic cocktails and a veritable arsenal of shooters. The pub grub lunch menu ranges from starters of grilled halloumi or duck spring rolls, to main-course chicken Kiev, salade Niçoise, pies and steaks. In the evenings, tapas take over (including all the usual suspects) alongside burgers and fish & chips. In a jolly (heated) rear courtyard, sip Prosecco (£19.95) as you soak up summer rays – but remember the wise words of Noël Coward, a huge fan of The Enterprise: only ‘Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun’.
