Originally a Victorian gin palace, The Elgin now cruises along as part of the Geronimo Inns chain: happily, the bar still retains its etched mirrors & wood panelling, while the cool ‘music room’ out back has a vaguely colonial feel. The menu combines British pub grub with forays into more ambitious, cheffy territory: potted shrimps & steaks might appear alongside sea bass fillet with braised fennel & orange hollandaise or shredded crispy duck accompanied by beetroot & green beans – although it’s probably best to stick to the less challenging options. In keeping with its early life, The Elgin offers 30 gins from the UK & beyond, plus a good range of draught ales & an impressive 36 wines by the glass. Regular free gigs & Sunday quiz nights are popular with locals.
