Local lad & designer David Mellor is internationally famous for his cutlery, & his chic, purpose-built factory in Hathersage in this stunning High Peak village is reckoned a minor
masterpiece of modern architecture. The adjacent design museum exhibits the Mellor family jewels, from traffic lights to tea spoons, & you can buy swanky kitchen thingamajigs in the rather
glamorous shop. A recent development is the uber-modern, glass-sided Design Museum Cafe, which serves up good coffee, chunky homemade cakes as well as more substantial dishes (with iconic Mellor
knives & forks, of course) as well as pot-roast pork sandwich with herb & honey-roasted baby potatoes, & creamy smoked haddock fishcakes with lemon leaves. A bowl of robustly flavoured
tomato soup & a Cornish brie & red onion marmalade sandwich will set you up nicely to stride out onto the stunning Derbyshire dales. Expect to rub shoulders with the Sheffield smart set
& don’t be surprised if you’re the only person not driving a Beemer or a Chelsea Tractor.
