The Dalby Cafe is a cheerful and somewhat iconic up-market greasy spoon in Margate, with a distinctive cream and red facade and a history dating back to the Second World War.
This cafe heralds itself as the maker of the best English fry-up around and this is certainly the place to come if you're feeling hungry. There's a large selection of plated-up breakfasts, as well as breakfast baguettes which can be stuffed with a topping of your choice, from fish fingers to deli ham. If you're really daring, you may choose to accept the challenge on the 'mega breakfast' which is crammed full of chips, hash browns, onion rings, a beef burger patty, eggs, sausages and much more. Those who can finish it are put on the wall of fame, and those who can do so within 20 minutes get the dish for free.
Customers are also invited to enjoy a main meal, though, with options ranging from cottage pie and corned beef, chips and peas, to roast of the day and steak and ale pie. If you've got room, there's a selection of sweet treats to choose from, too. We like the sound of the rice pudding and jam.
The Dalby Cafe claims to be one of, if not the, oldest cafe in Margate and proudly wears its history. For example, the seating is formed from old Margate trams and after all this time, they've kept the original formica tables with their retro, yellow pattern.
If you're visiting Margate, this is definitely a must-visit spot to soak up the spirit and character of this well-loved seaside town.
