Set in Edinburgh’s celebrated New Town, The Cumberland has a great deal to recommend it. On the inside, the decor is pub-traditional with lots of natural wood throughout the interconnected rooms
and snugs. The bar menu does familiar dishes like haddock & chips or sausage & mash, while there are usually eight real ales on tap from local favourites like Deuchars IPA to the likes of
Yellowhammer from the Black Isle Brewery north of Inverness, or Northern Light from Orkney. If you want single-malt whisky, there are around three dozen, and although The Cumberland is hardly a
wine bar, it does have a wider wine choice than the average pub – even bottles of Lanson Black Label Champagne. Outside, the main draw is the beer garden. One level down from the street, it may be
overlooked by high tenements, but it’s well kept and the New Town surroundings form part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
