Jimmy Wheeler has been running his little crab and lobster café on the beach for a few years, going out on his fishing boat early every morning – tides permitting. The Shed doesn’t take bookings, so it’s pot luck securing one its outdoor tables for lunch – though takeaways are always available. Many come for wife Mandy’s pasties – a seductive combination of fresh crabmeat and leeks in puff pastry – and for her crab and lobster salads, served simply with some green leaves and boiled new potatoes; there are also some seasonal specials, too, such as crab and asparagus frittata. The Wheelers are an established island family, with a history dating back to the 1500s; Jimmy’s brother Mark operates the hugely popular Boathouse restaurant a couple of doors up. Note: open Easter to October; no bookings.
