Weave your way through the labyrinthine sprawl of Bembridge and you’ll reach this one-time smugglers’ haunt right on the coastal path. With its far-reaching views across the eastern Solent, the Crab & Lobster plays host to a better behaved crowd these days (the coastguard sits rights next door), and there are always crowds in the cavernous dining rooms at weekends. The kitchen sends out classic pub grub alongside a more ambitious seafood menu, with the eponymous crustacea naturally given top billing. Starters such as baked crab ramekin (loaded with mozzarella and topped with crunchy crumbs) kick off the proceedings, along with crab cakes and salads, but grilled Bembridge Ledge lobsters are the main attraction, served with lemon, garlic or plain butter – although the creamy thermidor version is snapped up by more decadent-minded diners.
