Quite the hidden gem, the Cock of Notting Hill has plenty to crow about. This Victorian backstreet boozer has been recently revamped, producing a saloon bar – all carmine plush – that’s a cosy winter hole-up. Outside, the canopy-covered terrace is a sweet spot for summer drinking. Eat casually, alfresco, or in an upstairs dining room. From a Brit-ish menu, try the moist and flavoursome ham hock and pistachio terrine, oysters, or roast beetroot and thyme soup pepped up with horseradish. Follow with duck leg and pork cassoulet, or Brie, wild mushroom and leek turnover, and then ices and sticky puds. To drink, there are draught London craft beers (Sambrook’s, Portobello Brewing Co), as well as Sangria, Spritzes and Bellinis. Wine starts at around £17 – for perky Puglian Primitivo – with over 20 available by the glass. This lovable local also has board games, a quiz night (Tuesday) and a regular supper club.
