A landmark for generations, this pub’s position close to the station makes it ideal for commuters to pop into on the way home to meet up with friends. With all the accoutrements expected of a proper pub, there’s a good choice of drinks on tap plus a reasonable wine list, as well as a couple of cocktails. A decent array of bar food – fries, nachos, chicken wings and biltong – will keep hunger pangs away, but if you want a proper meal try burgers made with delicious Buccleugh beef (there are chicken and vegetarian versions as well), haddock and crab fishcakes or Cajun chicken skewers. They even screen sporting events and bring in DJ’s at the weekend. The only thing missing from the trad pub feel is the sticky carpet, but we can all learn to live without that.
