The Chequers Inn

SquareMeal Review of The Chequers Inn

Such is its glorious rural location – down some exceedingly tortuous country lanes – that finding the Chequers Inn can be something of a challenge. At heart, this stone-built, 17th-century inn remains true to its roots, with locally brewed ales on draught in the rustic bar – although a stellar selection of malt whiskies & gins hint that this is no ordinary boozer. Wine choice is first class, too, so it’s worth bearing in mind that there are four spacious bedrooms in an adjacent stable block. Elsewhere, the dining areas have a relaxed, casual look, combining traditional virtues with contemporary zing. The aim is to serve modern British dishes based on fine produce, be it sauté of black pudding with chorizo, Parma ham, poached egg & hollandaise sauce, sea bream with olive-crushed potatoes, garlic & basil cream or a pub classic of locally made sausages & mash with onion gravy.

Beautiful food in a beautiful setting
The Chequers is one of our favourite restaurants in the area. The food is always gorgeous, the atmosphere is cosy and the service friendly. What more could you want? Well, actually, if you eat in the garden, there is a wonderful view of the English countryside just to finish it off. Lunch outside at the Chequers on a rare sunny English Sunday is one of my lasting happy food memories.
