Very much a local community boozer, with a sociable beer garden, log fires, ‘Rob the piano man’ playing on Sunday nights, and a calendar of quirky events such as ‘vintage clothes’ pop-ups, this Walthamstow watering hole is just the ticket for E17. Inside, a wall of books, standard lamps, bare tables and wood floors set the scene, while menus are chalked up on big blackboards. There are no great shocks on the monthly changing line-up, but plenty of decent pub grub in the shape of black pudding Scotch eggs, whole plaice with parsley butter or roast chicken with fried polenta alongside pies, char-grilled steaks and burgers (including a beetroot and quinoa version). For afters, perhaps order spiced rhubarb cake with custard. To drink, we’d recommend BrewDog’s Punk IPA, although there are also some easy-drinking wines and familiar cocktails.
