SquareMeal Review of The Captain Kidd

Bronze Award

Old geezers & suave young Docklands residents can be found mingling at The Captain Kidd, passing the time of day & discussing the price of a pint – although with Sam Smith’s affordable brews on hand, there are no worries on that score. This Thames-side boozer is a gloriously atmospheric dive, with stone floors, wooden beams & exposed brickwork preserving the vintage feel, plus a cobbled terrace & benches running along the river wall providing the best seats outside the house. The views are of Canary Wharf’s shimmering towers, Thames cruisers & ducks bobbing up & down – heaven on a sunny day. The basic pub fare is as cheap as the Yorkshire ale: expect lasagne, chilli, scampi & chips, bangers or toad-in-the-hole at well under a tenner.

Went there on Saturday July 3, 2010 for a drink and a meal, arrived at 1600 and proceeded to have a few drinks until food service resumed at 1800, at 1805 ordered our meal and noticed other meals were being sent to their respective tables but not ours at 1855 asked a member of the bar staff what was taking so long as pudding was starting to arrive from the kitchen. At 1905 asked another member of staff what was taking so long as the first member of staff did not come back to us to advise us of the problem and was advised by the second member of staff that the order was not in as yet and the first member was new to the job (which was obvious). 1915 asked a third member of staff to speak with the manager and was advised that when the manager was seen (not found) she would send him over. 1930 manager and third member of staff were both behind the bar without manager being told that he was wanted by PAYING customers to have a word. 1940 saw the manager and WENT OVER TO GET HIM as he was never told that he needed to be spoken to. After advising him of what happened and the fact that we live nearby and pass many places to dine to go to the Captain Kidd he said ‘thanks for pointing that out’. I have worked in a 700 room hotel for seven years and five years in destination tourism so feel qualified enough to ‘have a say’. No resolution was offered nor any offer extended in an effort to make it right. As it is a business I understand from my hotel days what costs are associated with food and beverage so an offer of a dessert ‘on the house’ or even a drink would have cost NOTHING as with drinks oftentimes a ‘drink on the house’ would fall under the breakage/spillage allocation that an informed manager makes allowances for. If I am not mistaken this is a credit crunch and the fact that I walk past The Prospect Of Whitby which is a LOVELY pub that I frequent to go to the Captain Kidd to spend my money says much. I am not asking for anything free at all but an offer of some kind gesture would have gone a long way as being ignored is never a nice feeling ESPECIALLY when I am spending my hard earned income. Again I understand from my hotel days that things happen and I accept that and as a result am always accommodating for such allowances but I refuse to be ignored after I flag something up. Don’t get me wrong the decor is great and the atmosphere is lovely but being ignored is something that I CANNOT accept as a paying customer.
