New York-style steakhouse The Butcher’s Bar & Grill occupies premises that once housed the Brewery Tap – a boozer frequented by generations of rowdy Glasgow University students. However, it seems the drinkers’ loss is everyone else’s gain, because the Butchershop Bar & Grill is very good indeed.
The look of the dining room screams classic steakhouse, with straightforward and moody decor, which includes exposed stone walls, studded brown leather banquette seating and metallic pendant lights which hover just a few inches above the center of tables. There are also some rather lovely views of local landmarks which can be seen via windows that flood the space with natural light, while large curved booths in the corners are well suited to group dining.
As you would expect from a restaurant that would not look out of place in a countryside hunting lodge, the menu here is mighty and meaty. The a la carte bookends its top-quality steak with starters and desserts that suggest this is a talented kitchen - think the indulgent likes of a black pudding Scotch egg or Philly cheesesteak spring rolls to begin, rounded off by a liberal helping of sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream.
As for the stars of the show, the beef here comes as chateaubriand (for two), fillet, rib-eye, rump, sirloin and T-bone, all served with tomato, chips or mash and a sauce, although the menu also provides alternatives for those who don’t dig steak - think bacon-wrapped turkey with sage and onion stuffing, gravy and veg or a cauliflower ‘steak’ for veggie diners. You can also pad out your steak or main with side dishes such as mac ‘n’ cheese, onion rings or a house salad.
On Sundays, head to The Butchershop Bar & Grill for a traditional hearty Sunday roast accompanied by all of the classic trimmings.
