‘Whisky galore’ is the slogan at this unassuming Grade II-listed boozer (circa 1811) – & it proves the point with up to 250 different brands arrayed behind the splendour of its traditionally tiled, public bar. Owners Markus Stephens & Peter Barnett have spent the last 15 years assembling a prodigious & treasured collection that embraces everything from Scottish single malts & classy blends to elite names from around the globe – no wonder The Britons Protection is a Mecca for devotees of the spirit. By contrast, the kitchen summons up an ‘old English’ vibe with a pie-heavy menu touting the likes of steak & Guinness or ‘grunt, gobble, zoom & coo’ (ie. wild boar, turkey, hare & pigeon) alongside veggie lasagne or venison in red wine sauce. Beer buffs aren’t neglected either, with names such as Jennings Cumberland & Robinson’s Unicorn on the pumps.
