Glasgow’s premier real ale bar, the Bon Accord sits just 100 yards from the distinctive dome of the Mitchell Library. Inside, all is tidy and traditional, with no 21st-century flourishes to distract from the real ales and prodigious number of malt whiskies that have won it many awards. Some of the beers come from expected Scottish breweries such as Deuchars, Tempest or Orkney, but there might also be a few names rarely seen north of the border – Tenacious Ted from the Lake District or Hayloft from the Grafton Brewery in Nottinghamshire. As for the whiskies, the Bon Accord claims ‘over 350’: this is the kind of place where Isle of Jura, Laphroaig and Macallan sit on 35ml optics. The bar menu ranges from baked potatoes, cod goujons and Cajun chicken to burgers, steaks and macaroni cheese.
