The laid-back brother to the neighbouring Bleeding Heart Bistro, this picture-perfect wine bar has a fine history as a tavern dating back to 1746 when it was proud of its simple mission statement: ‘drunk for a penny, dead drunk for two pence.' Now, in this 2022 reincarnation as a wine bar, the humourous spirit lives on but locals appreciate some modern-day sophistication too, not least with its menu offering signature dishes such as Mrs Pugh’s suckling piglets from the rotisserie as well as chef Phil Cooper's riffs on offal such as bleeding heart on mash or duck liver and foie gras ballotine with truffled green beans.
For starters, you can go to the value end of the menu (red mullet and roasted tomato soup) or push the boat out with grilled scallops. Popular mains include grilled rump steak with peppercorn sauce and fat chips or lemon sole with brown shrimp butter. Desserts are a serious matter for many regulars, who wouldn't stand up the chance for a passion fruit brulée or classic pear tarte tatin stylishly partnered with simple pouring cream.
The beer-y culture maybe no more but it is no matter to a broad clientele of glass-clinking Farringdon suits, dates and family groups, who enjoy the decor for its simple, elegant charm in which new-fangled 21st century post-modernism is kept at a safe distance. Their tipple is most likely to come from a well-curated wine list that features Bleeding Heart classics alongside a smattering of organic and natural wines. Downstairs is a private dining room (No.1 Dining Room) that can be booked for receptions up to 60 people or 50 seated.
