An appealing market town in scenic Wensleydale, Masham has the added attraction of being the home of the renowned Black Sheep Brewery: the visitor centre and bistro here are integral to the building, which is a handsome stone shrine to good food and ale. Fans are encouraged to whet their appetite with a tipple or two before settling down to a hearty lunch in the slightly 80s, Habitat-style eatery. Expect honest fare such as warm Wensleydale cheese and caramelised onion tart, fish pie, burgers and steaks, plus Scotch eggs and treacle-cured ham ciabbatas. Home-baked cakes also go down well with a cup of coffee. There’s a ‘pub’ too, with old oak floors, wood-burning stove and Black Sheep beers on tap. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, you can book a table in the mezzanine restaurant, which comes with its own far-reaching views.
