Decked out in idiosyncratic style, with distressed wood and antiques, log fires, fashionable paintwork and artwork creating a chic mishmash of ‘Country Living meets farmhouse kitchen’, this sympathetically restored 15th-century inn is now back on song, following the return of well-liked hosts Chris and Hayley Lee. On the food front, Chris offers a flexible repertoire of accessible but upbeat dishes to suit all tastes: you can get sandwiches, oysters, lobster wraps and tandoori soft-shell crab at the bar, while the main menu is split between ‘classics’ and ‘select’ dishes. The former might see moules marinière, Red Poll burgers and fish stew with fennel salad, while the latter could promise pig’s head and ham hock terrine with pineapple or roast sea bass with snails, white beans and parsley followed by hot pain d’épice soufflé with honey ice cream. Judiciously chosen British cheeses and global wines round off the package.
