If you’re looking for an escape from Bristol that doesn’t require too much of a journey then The Bear & Swan could be just what you’re after. This traditional pub finds itself on the edges of the city and somehow manages to feel like a countryside escape despite its close proximity to all of the action the hub of the town has to offer.
Found on the boarders of the Chew Valley, this 18th-century coaching inn is a popular pitstop for those looking to explore the many walks in the area, as well as those on a day out to Chew Valley Lake - a popular spot for bird watching and angling.
Ingredients, where possible, are locally sourced and result in a menu packed full of fresh, vibrant plates of food that change regularly to reflect the seasons and availability. For starters there are a choice of six or seven things each day which might include things like a cauliflower steak with hazelnuts, coriander and miso for vegan diners or a chicken and ham ballotine for the meat eaters.
Mains bring a selection of pub favourites like beef and ale stew with mash, a homemade beef burger in a brioche bun or honey mustard roasted ham with a duck egg and hand-cut chips. There’s an additional mains section for more cheffy plates like a skate wing with brown shrimp butter or daily market fish specials. Steaks are also a permanent fixture, as are a range of sides like salad, chips and onion rings.
If you happen to be passing earlier in the day there’s also a breakfast and brunch menu, which is perfect to set you up for a day of exploring should you have big plans to see the nearby area.
As with lots of high-end countryside pubs, The Bear & Swan does get busy, so we’d recommend booking in advance where possible.
