SquareMeal Review of The Bar & Sky Terrace

Bronze Award

Land on this square of the Monopoly board & go straight to jail: no great hardship when the clink in question comes with passion-fruit mojito, peach Bellini or pear & elderflower Collins to soften your stretch. This hotel bar is fashioned from a converted magistrate’s court, & you can book one of the original holding cells – complete with loos (now water features) – that housed celebrity detainees such as Oscar Wilde & Johnny Rotten. Nowadays, porridge gives way to canapés & panini, & although some might rate prices here ‘daylight robbery’, you’re getting off lightly by five-star West End hotel standards. If the window-less room sends you stir crazy, escape to the Soho Sky Terrace, a summer rooftop bar with deals such as a bucket of beer & a barbecue platter for £27. With Pimm’s, pink Champagne & sporting action to watch on discreet TV screens, this open ‘prison’ is a breeze.

Very disappointing given the prices charged
I brought my family to London to do some shopping, have a meal and see a show. I thought it would be a lovely treat to have cocktails/drinks at the Soho Sky Terrace . The pictures seemed to show an ideal location particularly on a hot summers afternoon. However when we arrived the scene was quite different. My 18 year son commented that, it looked a little like a poorly put together shop display at B&Q. The plastic furniture was old and the flooring of poor synthetic grass did nothing to improve the look. Maybe in the dark this might get by but in the harsh light of a bright summer's afternoon it looked very down market and shabby. Having been told when I called two days before that we could not reserve, the staff said all the tables had been reserved and were inclined first, to try to turn our party of seven away although there was no one there. Although the bar had lines of spirits on display the drinks menu was extremely limited – only three cocktails. The service was attentive but the lack of understanding was painful at times. Thank goodness it started to spit with rain after our first drink and we collectively decided that another venue might come closer to expectations. Unless the decor, bar list and general demeanor changes I for one won't be visiting again.
