SquareMeal Review of The Ashmolean Dining Room

Bronze Award

A location on the top floor of the superbly transformed Ashmolean Museum ensures that this eatery gets its full quota of tourists, academics & students. Plate glass windows let in plenty of light & there’s a terrace with rooftop views, plus a lawn with deckchairs for some really classy alfresco eating & drinking. Inside it’s smart, snappy & convivial, with a winning formula of keenly priced sharing platters plus large & small plates taking in French bistro staples (grilled minute steak with pommes frites), Italian classics (risotto, linguine al pesto, melanzane parmigiana, osso bucco) & a few Spanish dishes thrown in for good measure. Meals end well – if desserts such as superb fig & frangipane tart or chocolate & espresso mousse are anything to go by. A perky wine list & efficient staff seal the deal.

About

Situated atop the beautiful and well known Ashmolean Museum, the cafe and restaurant attracts plenty of visitors — including tourists, scholars, and students alike. High up, there is ample natural light that flows through the big glass windows, while the rooftop terrace is home to stunning views of Oxford and a lawn that is filled with deckchairs, making it a great place to visit if you’re looking for something fun to do in the city after a visit to the museum. The cafe is open daily from 10am until 5pm, whilst the restaurant opens between 11.30am and 5pm.

Starters include the chicory salad with crumbled Stilton, mulled wine poached pear, candied walnuts, Oxfordshire honey and a cider vinegar dressing, along with a smoked mackerel pâté served with rye and sunflower croûtes, beetroot and horseradish emulsion, soused salad of capers, cornichons and cucumber. The dishes sound delicious, right? For your main, enjoy the forest mushroom Stroganoff with baked garden herb polenta, crispy courgette spaghetti and black garlic emulsion, or the Oxford pork sausages with a grain mustard mash, Savoy cabbage, red onion gravy and fried leeks.

If you are a lover of all things classically British, which you probably are if you find yourself in Oxford, then why not try the afternoon tea. It's a meal complete with sweet treats like the lemon sponge with a raspberry drizzle, a matcha and strawberry Battenberg, shortbread with Ashmolean gin and chantilly cream with blackberries, and a raspberry eclair. Scones are served on the menu, of course, and are tea infused with English clotted cream and Tiptree jam. Savoury bites include the coronation chicken and rocket mini brioche, the pulled ham, piccalilli and pickled cucumber on light rye bread, and the smoked salmon and herbed cream cheese in between a dark rye croute.

Surely better value elsewhere?
This restaurant is bright and spacious, with a delightful view, and the waiting staff are friendly and efficient. However, the lunch which I was served there yesterday was very poor value for money. A Bellini aperitif would not have passed muster in Venice but was acceptable. Potted crab was nothing of the sort, just a miniature tumbler containing a few teaspoons of over-chilled white and brown crab meat accompanied by three minuscule pieces of unbuttered toast. A main course portion of cep risotto was good on flavour, less so on consistency and was of starter size. As I was (not surprisingly) still hungry, I ordered two portions of English cheese and for my £7 received two tiny pieces, with a few grapes and strips of celery (cheese and accompaniments all painfully over-refigerated) and a few small biscuits. The wine list was unimaginative and over-priced. No vintages were shown. A glass of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and another of Chablis both represented the bottom of the scale for each variety. I departed £55 (including tip) poorer and still hungry. There is surely better value to be found elsewhere in Oxford. This place has great potential but at present this is far from being realised.
