Taquitos Casazul serves traditional Mexican food in Brighton Open Market. It’s been open since 2019 and is family-run. As well as a food stall, it also has an online shop. This stocks a range of speciality Mexican ingredients and taco kits to recreate recipes at home. Gabriel, the owner, is always on hand to greet guests and explain the menu.
The selection of tacos showcase a broad range of Mexican cuisine. Tacos de mole are filled with their namesake sauce, which in this case is a chicken version. This contains over 40 ingredients, including chillies, spices, nuts, seeds and bitter chocolate. There’s also tacos de Chile Colorado. Popular throughout Mexico, Chile Colorado is tender pieces of beef stewed in a richly flavoured chilli sauce. Here it is then filled into three tacos and topped with sliced avocado.
Tacos de conchinita round out the food menu. This is three tacos filled with pulled pork marinated in a mild sauce made from Achiote (a spice and colouring agent extracted from the seeds of the Bixa orellana shrub) and oranges. These are then topped with pickled red onions. Each of the taco options is also available in vegan form. The meats are substituted for oyster mushrooms or carrots and the dairy products for their vegan equivalents. Rice and refried beans are the two side dishes on offer.
