Situated in a prime spot opposite Liverpool Street station, Sushidog Bishopsgate is the fourth new site from this fun, relaxed, fast-food sushi concept. The best way to describe this restaurant is a Japanese-American hybrid - or perhaps the sushi version of Subway - but we’ll get to that in a moment.
The Bishopsgate site is certainly more of a takeaway than a dine-in restaurant (though there are a few seats available) - a busy place for workers to pick up a quick bite before the commute home. It’s small, airy and bright, with a jaunty pop music soundtrack that creates a light-hearted atmosphere. Serving sushi rolls, poke bowls and Asian salads, the menu is full of fresh ingredients that leaves you feeling satisfied and full of healthy, delicious food.
But these are more than just sushi rolls, these are more like sushi burritos. We opted against the signature rolls and chose to make our own from the arrangement of fresh toppings behind the counter. That is the beauty of Sushidog, everything is customisable. Fancy a simple roll with two toppings? Done. Fancy a double helping of fresh, sushi grade salmon, plus five toppings and two sauces? Done. Prepped and rolled in front of you, the team let you select, and will even recommend, all the best toppings. These guys make sushi-rolling look easy, handing over burrito-sized sushi rolls in minutes of you entering the shop.
We enjoyed our gigantic, personalised rolls alongside the Sushidog-style tater tots, smothered in sriracha mayo, hot sauce, chillies and spring onions. While our first batch were on the cold-side, the flavours were delicious - a kick without being too spicy - leading us to a second round of tots that were newly out the fryer and much more enjoyable.
It is certainly an exciting new concept that is evidently already attracting a large crowd, eager to try these personalised rolls, eaten like a classic American hotdog. Oh, and don’t forget to grab yourself some mochi for a quick dessert.
