This small, unspoilt 17th-century stone pub – set in idyllically rustic Sussex countryside – is a charm-laden local gem noted for its unspoilt authenticity & friendly welcome. Flagstones, floorboards & a big inglenook dominate the bar area, where locals come to soak up the atmosphere & enjoy the Sussex ales & generously proportioned pub fare. Horse brasses & other traditional paraphernalia decorate the walls, while the small dining room at one end is cosier & carpeted in pink. The homespun food fits the rural backdrop – so expect amply filled baguettes, & hearty winter warmers such as slow-cooked venison casserole with fruity Cumberland sauce or homemade steak & kidney pudding. A rear garden, plus a few tables & parasols out front, please the sun-seekers; the Stag is dog- & child-friendly too.
