As the name very much suggests, Smokehouse Islington is all about serving up tasty, grilled and smoked dishes, led by ingredient with transparent supply chains. The team have been working on this concept for just over a decade, prioritising relationships with the best farmers, butchers and suppliers in London and across the UK, to create a unique menu, brimming with unusual cuts.
The team are passionate about sharing their love for their suppliers, explaining that all fish is delivered daily from Cornish markets and caught on day boats meaning it's fresh as possible, while the meat selection changes weekly with carcasses arriving from the best farms in the UK. Fruit and vegetables arrive fresh from Natoora greengrocer and all of this is cooked over charcoal, roast and smoked using sustainably sourced English oak.
Based on Canonbury Road, the restaurant isn't far from either the overground or underground and based in a gorgeous, period building with loads of space, high ceilings and natural light. The decor is homely and rustic, with large, wooden tables and country-style wall panelling, while outside there's a lovely terrace and garden for the warmer weather.
Why not start off with a seasonal cocktail, such as a marmalade negroni or Islington old fashioned, before moving onto some smaller bites for the table. There's pistachio Mortadella with pickled cornichons, as well as baked sourdough with beef dripping and whipped butter, and taramasalata with seaweed potato crisps.
Fresh, seasonal starters might look like Wye Valley asparagus with peas, shimiji and Yorkshire pecorino, as well as Cornish Crab and buckwheat crumpet with pickled fennel and fine herbs. For mains, we like the sound of the rotisserie poussin chicken with fermented cep, jus gras and fries, alongside Old Spot pork chop, smoked celeriac remoulade and sauce charcutiere. Sides look great too, with options like grilled hispi cabbage with black garlic and miso butter.
