Since the 1830s, this spot has been a pub, known under various names over the years. It is conveniently situated just around the corner from Dorset Square and boasts historical significance as the former site of Lord's Old Ground, the first Lord’s cricket ground, from 1787 to 1811. A rent dispute prompted the MCC (the Marylebone Cricket Club) to relocate first to a spot near Regent’s Park and eventually to its present location in St John’s Wood. Today, you'll find Sir John Balcombe as your welcoming neighbourhood pub in London, offering a great selection of food and beverages. This dog friendly pub also welcomes families, and has a lovely outside area, as well as playing TNT Sports on HD screens.
The lunch menu is served until 4pm and includes a delicious selection of sandwiches, served on soft white bloomer bread with seasoned skin on fries and a dressed salad. Choose from a sandwich loaded with tender grilled chicken breast and streaky bacon with avocado, sliced tomato, iceberg lettuce and mayo, or a filling of tomato, creamy mozzarella and chive mayo.
If you're visiting the pub with a group of loved ones, perhaps you'll enjoy the grazing menu. Why not order a selection of dishes from the table, from grilled ale flavoured pork sausages, tossed in a deliciously sticky wholegrain mustard and blossom honey glaze and fresh marinated olives, to a sharer of southern-fried chicken goujons with deliciously sticky BBQ sauce, Cumberland sausages, chicken wings, grilled mango, chilli and pineapple glazed chicken skewers, topped nachos, garlic bread and mayo.
Those who need a gluten free meal will be pleased with the variety available at Sir John Balcombe, from a signature quinoa salad tossed with broccoli, cucumber, peas, slow-roasted tomatoes, spinach, sugar snap peas, red onion and rocket leaves, drizzled with a lemon and olive oil dressing to some smoky soya nachos with all the toppings.
