Enviable sea views at just one of the assets at Aldeburgh’s best-known and most prestigious hotel, which stands a stone’s throw from the town’s shingle beach. Now rebranded as the Seafood & Grill, the restaurant also boasts terrific maritime vistas as well as breezy seaside colour schemes and a menu based on the haul from the East Coast boats. Mersea oysters, Harwich lobsters and Aldeburgh crabs have their moment, alongside marinated squid with Suffolk chorizo, roast skate with shaved fennel and pesto, sea trout ‘en papillote’ with confit lemon and samphire or breadcrumbed day-boat plaice with fries. Steaks, burgers and pasta suit other tastes, while comforting desserts might bring Bakewell tart, rose water pannacotta or sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream. Wines are taken seriously, and the sea-facing terrace/bar is divine for bracing alfresco meals.
