San Carlo Manchester

SquareMeal Review of San Carlo Manchester

Part of the big-city San Carlo group, this immensely popular Italian rocks even when tumbleweed blows through the rest of the city. At weekends, star-spotting at the huge bar is a regular pastime, as punters see if they can espy Rihanna, Ant & Dec, Sir Alex Ferguson and other A-list regulars. Apart from the glitz and the excellent cocktails, the main attraction is the combination of good trattoria food and sparky service transplanted to a sleek urban setting. Top shouts on the menu include beef carpaccio, richly sauced steaks and pasta – perhaps linguine with clams or garganelli with spicy Calabrian sausage and porcini. Otherwise, fish specials from the blackboard go down a treat with plenty of Champagne – why not? Overall, the cooking is much better than you might expect from a branded venue.

About

San Carlo began in Sicily, which is the birthplace of the restaurant's chairman, Carlo Distefano. When Carlo arrived in Britain back in 1962, he was just 17 years old and had a job in a barbershop and £12 to his name. Although Carlo went on to open a few other businesses before officially opening a restaurant, food was always Carlo's passion. After a busy working week Carlo would dine at restaurants in The Savoy, The Dorchester and Simpsons, and he became infatuated with a love of great food and hospitality.

From the antipasti menu try the Colchester rock oysters served with shallots in red wine vinegar and tabasco, or fried Sicilian rice balls with truffle and parmesan to eat alongside your meal or with your loved ones. Fresh mussels, salad and mixed mushrooms are all also on the menu. To share amongst your table, order the platter of deep fried calamari, prawns, scampi and scallops served with tartare and garlic chilli mayonnaise. The tartare dish of sashimi grade tuna mixed with olive oil, mustard, lemon juice and wild rocket and served with Altamura crostini is always a hit.

Enjoy pizza classics for your main, like the fior de latte margherita pizza topped with oregano, or the diavola with buffalo mozzarella, spicy Calabrian sausage, onions and chilli. Other main dishes include zitoni toscanini – long pasta tubes, favourite of the great Maestro Toscanini, made with Tuscan spiced sausage, extra virgin olive oil, tomatoes and pecorino cheese, and pollo milanese which is a flattened breast of chicken in breadcrumbs pan-fried, served with rocket and Pachino tomato. Whatever you order at San Carlo, you will be sure to return for more.

Appalling

Appalling. Avoid....unless you are 1) known to staff, 2) a footballer, 3) appear to have money, 4) want to be treated like something that would be put out with the bins. We arrived just before our booking time. On the door the staff were abrupt until we said we had a booking. The reception staff - seemingly it takes three people to stare at screen, gossip, ignore, decide whether you are considered acceptable to dine here. We moved to the bar which was buzzing with activity, with a pleasant atmosphere (thankfully) not over-run or packed, staff were a little bit slow on the uptake once galvanised into action three staff made our drinks. When other staff become available they checked if we were being served. The maitre d', or Mãnuel without a personality or capability, scampered between tasks, but achieved little. He routinely returned to the bar to ask how many were in your group, ignored this & then promptly walk away to be seen emptying tables, removing glasses elsewhere. Guests who had arrived after us were seated before us. Initially we didn't notice this, why would we it's not our responsibility? As time continued to pass, & we still weren't seated we approached reception. The sneering response was simply it was not their responsibility, without any alternative being offered. Eventually we were taken to our table. We were shoe-horned amongst other tables, almost joining other diners, at least they had food. Menus were given out, no offer to take a drink order was made. We waited for another torturous period before another member of staff came to take our food order. In the meantime due to the position of our table one of our party was constantly bumped into by staff & guests - akin to a pinball machine - such a thrill! We asked three members of staff (shortly after being seated, once when staff walked past, when we placed our order) to be relocated. We received a feeble response stating they only had two tables for two people each. Great that's what we want, a table for four! Of course we weren't offered an alternative position because they had overbooked. When we asked the waiter how long the food would take we were met with laughter. They couldn't say & weren't prepared to seek out clarification. At this point we decided to leave, a throw away 'Sorry' was offered. If they were sorry they would have attempted to resolve the issues, of which there were many. Thankfully we were able to take our business elsewhere, to a restaurant with suitably deployed staff, a good table, excellent food & great atmosphere

The title pretty much sums it up. I regularly travel to Manchester for business and football and this is the restaurant that I always book. It may be part of the San Carlo chain but that belies the family values behind it. Great food, excellent service and as good an atmosphere as any restaurant you'll ever find. I wouldn't advise it for a quiet romantic meal – for example, you'd have to shout if you wanted to propose and whilst this would most likely be met by the rest of the diners shouting and whooping there approval, your intended might be less flattered. Apart from the food and service, this is the place to go to see and be seen. You'll be rubbing shoulders with TV stars, footballers, businessmen, stunning ladies and probably a villain or two. Quite simply, go to San Carlo. Do not pass Go, do not collect £200.

I love the atmosphere at San Carlo. There’s always a great buzz, last weekend we went we saw some Corrie stars dining a few tables away! We’ll make sure to bring a camera next time!
