Sake might be about to have its moment, in which case the queue to this unique Sake and Oyster Bar, in a corner of food emporium Ichiba in Westfield, will grow faster than a Japanese daikon. Experimental gastronomes eager to try what many experts believe is one of the great gastronomic pairings.
Whitstable or Jersey oysters are the stock in trade, paired here with Japanese sake picked by expert sommeliers. Try Jersey oysters with a simple squeeze of lemon or a variety of other condiments, although our favourite is the classic (mignonette vinegar and shallot sauce). You'll find 20-odd sakes on offer, including a hot one and a cloudy one that delivers a limoncello sweetness. And don't be afraid to engage with the sommelier behind the bar, you'll get a mini-masterclass into the bargain.
Ichiba is owned and run by Japan Centre, so if this experience captures your imagination, we wouldn't bet against you adding a couple of bottles from the shop on your way out – there are apparently 80 to choose from.
