Although the Cowley Road is famed as a hotbed for eccentricity, the notion of replacing your signage with a wall-mounted bicycle might seem a bit odd. But when you factor in stripped wood, monochrome art and displays of dried flowers, it’s simply part of the Rusty Bicycle’s quirky charm. Real ales are kept in good order, with five hand pumps dispensing a trio of Arkell’s ales plus two rotating guest brews. Mugs of hot chocolate and draughts of mulled wine are big hits during the winter, while warmer months might see homemade elderflower cordial or berries from local allotments employed as mixers. Cooking is kept honest and simple, with mini-pies and Scotch eggs alongside more exotic ideas such as feta and kofte wraps or hoummos with harissa relish and flatbread. Expect a mixed, but friendly boho crowd.
