‘We cook it long and slow so you can eat it fast!’ say the owners of Rub Diner – a funky urban eatery and bar tricked out in punky style with flashes of ornate old-English culture, weird curios and eccentric furnishings. An American smoker is at the heart of things, as the kitchen delivers a raft of burgers, pulled pork, shredded chicken, four riffs on mac ‘n’ cheese, and chilli served on specially made ‘brumplings’ with jalapeño jam. There are also self-styled ‘biggy smalls’ (think hot buffalo wings, baby back ribs, piggy fries and ‘burnt ends’ of brisket) to go with shakes, sodas and floats. A long, contemporary-style bar runs the length of the room, with stools for those who crave cocktails and other boozy libations. The owner plans to launch a range of rubs, marinades and sauces in the near future.
